Sharps Disposal

You can return used sharps to NUAA’s Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) at 345 Crown St Surry Hills, from 8am to 10pm Monday to Friday. There is also a disposal bin attached to the outside of the building if you need to dispose used sharps outside these hours.

If you live outside inner Sydney, most NSPs collect used sharps and will supply you with safe disposal bins of various sizes. If you are unsure where you closest NSP is to return used sharps, check out the AVIL Australian NSP Directory for an Australia-wide list of NSPs. Or you can check out the Safe Sharp website.

If you need used sharps picked up, you can call the NSW Needle Clean Up Hotline on 1800 633 353. It is a call centre that takes reports from the public and coordinates the clean-up of dumped needles and syringes in public places anywhere in NSW. You can find out more about community sharps management here.

What is The Safe Sharps Website?

The Safe Sharps website was launched by the NSW Minister for Health, Hon. Jillian Skinner MP, in 2011. The aim of the site is to assist sharps’ users to easily find the closet approved sharps’ disposal locations and bins to ensure that used sharps are safely disposed.

The website is linked to Google map’s letting you easily find disposal bin locations. Click on their site, enter your suburb and how far you want to travel and the website will find the closet disposal bin.

The great thing about the website is that it allows you as a user to upload information about sites not listed or let them know if information they provide is incorrect. You can upload information by smart phone or through the site. At present, there are more than 1,600 safe sharps locations listed and this will continue to grow as more local councils, pharmacies and NSP providers and sharps users add new information.
